Duke Ellington is undoubtedly one of the key figures in art history of the twentieth century; not ONLY to the world of Jazz. His artistry has influenced languages and ideas in a multitude of contexts related to creativity and communication. In the historical period, between the late twenties and the early thirties, in which Jazz was ghettoized and considered “racial music” Ellington, with his small orchestra, performed in clubs playing music that clearly distinguished itself from that of his contemporaries, both white or black.
With a ‘sound’ made up of unpublished chords, bewitching timbres, and sinuous and compact rhythms, the Ellington orchestra in brief time became known worldwide as the legendary “Cotton Club orchestra” and has engaged audiences for decades ….and continues to fascinate us today.
