With “Sisters in Jazz,” Cæcilie Norby, the Great Lady of Scandinavian jazz brings together some of Europe’s best musicians. Together they celebrate jazz classics and songs by the likes of Betty Carter, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln along with original compositions by Cæcilie Norby.
Let’s look at the story of jazz. It’s all… frankly… a little male oriented..no?
Of course there have always been very important female jazz singers, but instrumentalists and composers such as Jutta Hipp, Carla Bley or Geri Allen are few and far between. Female musicians are being more and more recognized for their excellence and making their strong presence felt in the arena of jazz music. Norby’s album “Sisters in Jazz” is a positive proof of just how good it gets!
Jazz is also feminine.
This Danish singer has never been afraid to explore new artistic avenues. Her unique and versatile singing style has allowed her to collaborate with the best instrumentalists on the international jazz scene. Most of which have been male! However, with this particular project, Norby explains: “There is no doubt that strong and competent female musicians are underrepresented on the music scene – nor is there any doubt that they exist – which makes it even more meaningful for me to be able to introduce some of these outstanding musicians to my fans”.
