The Goals and Actions of AmbriaJazz Green
Committing to a “Green” philosophy is a worthy but challenging undertaking and requires the contribution and mutual dedication of all the festival stakeholders and participants. Our entire staff seriously commits to this initiative. We invite the musicians, technicians and suppliers to join us in this mission. Together, we play important roles in spreading and encouraging green practices. Furthermore, we call on local administrations, associations, sponsors, the public, tourists and residents to also engage with environmental awareness and best practices.
We are already working together with the JTTG network to achieve the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda; a process that will be implemented over time. Below you will find the list of actions that AmbriaJazz has already adopted or intends to adopt to meet the Minimum Environmental Criteria identified by the European Union for Green Festivals, with the help of the Eco Sistemi Foundation and together with the JTTG network.
Here is our checklist:
Reducing Consumption and Natural Resources.
- Minimizing paper materials using double-sided printing on eco Labels or recycled FSC PEFC paper plus collaborating with local, environmentally friendly print shops.
- Increasing the use of digital platforms for disseminating infomation and promotion, tickets and reservations.
- Eliminating the use of disposable items, instead utilizing plastic free and recycled materials.
- Providing stainless steel water thermoses for musicians and audience members to fill at local water fountains, which are mapped out online for the festival.
Selecting appropriate concert venues.
- Almost all of the Concerts in Nature are located far from Environmental Zones of Special Protection or Special Conservation, except for the concerts in Ambria, a small active village "borgo", located within the Orobie Park. In this location the performances are acoustic or with low amplification. When considering the potential impact on environmental noise, our concerts register a measurement of sound pollution less than that of local waterfalls.
- Post-performance sites are always cleaned up and restored to their original pre-concert condition.
Set-ups
- Stage set-ups are minimal, for example , natural settings or wooden platforms. AmbriaJazz uses only environmentally friendly equipment; plastic free, recycled, reusable and/or repairable. Signage is made of natural and recyclable materials with low environmental impact.
Backstage food and beverage supply;
- We offer only seasonal, fresh, km 0, organic food products from local producers or fair trade market. Attention is paid to allergens; We provide public water sources and/or drinkable fountain water. Packaging, plate ware and cutlery are washable, reusable or recyclable. We use only washable and reusable natural fabrics.
Transportation
- For the Public: we encourage sustainable pedestrian and bicycle mobility with an invitation to participate in #jazzcamminante. We provide information about public transportation and bike-car sharing and encourage ride-sharing and personal carpooling. The scheduling of daytime events allows for walking or biking to and from concerts.
- Transportation for the Musicians: we offer incentives to use public transportation or ride-sharing and the use of electric cars for local transfers.
Reception
- Accommodation facilities are chosen with a focus on eco-sustainability, adhering to the principles of Responsible Tourism set forth in the guidelines of the AltRaValtellina association network that promote the development of Responsible Tourism in Valtellina.
- Catering for musicians is chosen based on a sustainability rating to ensure that food is supplied by local producers.
Energy Consumption
- Mobile photovoltaic panels are used during events and concerts.
Waste Management
- We provide both onsite garbage collection and information to concert goers on the correct methods of separating and recycling refuse.
Accessibility and Equality
- We provide Joelette service and organizational support for people with walking difficulties according to a collaboration with the Dappertutto association and with UICI ( Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired) for accessibility for the blind are provided.
- A focus on social, multi-generational, gender inclusion, including activities geared toward youth and families.
- Attention is paid to providing equal opportunity with free access modes to events.
Staff and Partner Training
- Staff training activities are organized through specific webinars on environmental impacts and sustainability of events, information and training on how AmbriaJazz is specifically addressing and implementing these initiatives.
Public Information
- Information about the environmental impacts of events and the actions put in place to reduce them are published on the internet and publicized on-site during our concerts.
- Information on proper waste management and use of natural resources.
Contractual Clauses
- Offering equal opportunities for work and supply contracts.
Enhancement of the region; Valtellina
- Description of actions and initiatives to enhance the area;
- Online publication of area maps and travel guides;
- Maps indicating the location of public water fountains for refilling reusable water bottles;
- Guided tours of cultural, natural and heritage resources in collaboration with local associations.
Improvement actions in process
CO2 Consumption Calculation
- Digital compilation from data collected about transport usage. (km, fuel, car)
- Procedures and Web-based Calculators of CO2 emissions are being adopted.
- Calculation of greenhouse gases due to transportation.
- Calculation of water and energy consumption.
- Calculation of the quantity of sorted waste materials.
- Improvement actions to reduce consumption
- Initiatives for offsetting CO2 emitted during events.
Extreme Risk Management for Climate Change.
- Plan for managing extreme events that could impact the event, to be addressed with Civil Protection.
Sustainable Mobility
- Equipment is transported using environmentally friendly means.
- The promotion of carpooling and ride sharing and the use of electric cars, either personally owned or through contracted online platforms.
- The coordination of event schedules and public transportation.
- Arrangement for shuttle service.
- Collective material transport for event.
Health
- Smoking is banned during the event and designated smoking areas are provided.
Sustainability Promotion and Communication
- Stakeholder identification, engagement plan, and communication: In particular, Community Administrations are encouraged to clean and prepare their local drinking fountains which are indicated and mapped out on the AmbriaJazz website, to be equipped with electric car charging stations in their public parking lots and are invited to clean and prepare trails and areas that will host concerts.
- Promoting sustainability to the public with interactive and play areas on site.
- Visual materials are available to promote and inform about the benefits of separating different types of materials for recycling.
- Invitation to the public to walk or bike to the concerts with green mobility.
Sponsorship of cultural events
- Form with sustainability characteristics of sponsors (sustainability reporting, environmental management systems Emas/Iso 14000, Ecolabel or other eco-labels)
- Selection of Sponsors based on a sustainability rating
Cleaning products
- Use of products with Ecolabel criteria.
Packaging of Materials
- The use and reuse of packaging from recycled materials.
