This special preview concert demonstrates using recycled objects to create music: South Tyrolean musician, Max Castlunger, collects used objects, from ordinary household items to discarded industrial materials, to create authentic musical instruments with impressive research, dexterity and imagination. It is from his hands that the UPCYCLING MUSIC Green Art Music Project; with the UPCYCLING MUSIC BAND The UPCYCLING MUSIC Green Art Music Project and the UPCYCLING MUSIC BAND tours throughout Italy promoting the message that recycling is the first step that each of us can take in protecting the environment and can be applied in diverse contexts, including music.

The project is perfect for AmbriaJazz ODV which has embarked on a path of conversion into Green Fest since 2021 by joining the Italian Jazz Takes The Green network together with twenty other national festivals. For AmbriaJazz it is very important to announce the new edition of the Festival with the green message aimed at the population, thanks to the network with the Società Democratica Operaia and with the Civica Scuola di Musica di Chiavenna it will be possible to raise awareness even among the youngest who revolve around music. The UPCYCLING MUSIC BAND concert is part of the CIVIC FESTIVAL 2023 program that will enliven the City of Chiavenna with concerts and student essays.

For over 20 years I have been passionately collecting musical instruments of all kinds and origins. I am always fascinated by how people, anywhere in the world, are able to produce sounds, beat rhythms and play melodies with simple objects and natural materials. This is why I have spent a lot of time researching and studying the materials and related construction techniques used to create musical instruments. Inspired by the materials, sounds and construction techniques of musical instruments I collected, I started about 15 years ago to try my hand at building them, keeping the creative elaboration of natural materials and objects as a common thread. The UPCYCLING MUSIC BAND is composed of four multi-instrumentalists from the Trentino-Alto Adige Region. Speaking the 3 official regional languages (German, Italian, Ladin) these musicians embody the belief that music is a universal language for shared communication.

This project exclusively showcases musical instruments and sound sculptures such as tubophones, gongs, marimba, flute, salterio drums, drums of various kinds, each personally hand built by Max Castlunger.

This event introduces the current edition of the Festival AmbriaJazz 2023 ORIGINI and is supported by the Province of Sondrio in collaboration with the Società Democratica Operaia of Chiavenna and the Civic School of Music of Chiavenna.

The UPCYCLING MUSIC BAND concert is held at the Teatro della Società Democratica Operaia in Chiavenna, Sunday, June 4 at 6:30 p.m. Free admission with suggested offer.
